Domestic Violence and Intimate Partner Violence 101: A Foundational Guide for Helping Professionals
Course Description
This course equips learners with a comprehensive understanding of domestic violence and intimate partner violence, distinguishing these abusive dynamics from general relationship conflict using established professional frameworks. Learners will analyze common patterns of abuse, including coercive control, psychological abuse, technology-facilitated abuse, and reproductive coercion, while learning safe, trauma-informed screening and assessment protocols to evaluate risk escalation and lethality. The curriculum prepares participants to apply empowerment-based clinical responses, including client validation, structured safety planning, and collaborative referral coordination. Additionally, participants will examine how cultural, social, and systemic factors influence survivor experiences and create barriers to safety, all while navigating key ethical and legal responsibilities, such as confidentiality, accurate documentation, mandated reporting, and upholding client autonomy, in alignment with ACA, NBCC, and NASW ethical standards.
